Christian Thompson, the top dog for security at Mysten Labs, recently had a chat about gaming and how it’s like a creative lab for developers to experiment with different tech stuff. This conversation happened at the Future Blockchain Summit in Dubai on Oct. 14, where Thompson spoke about gaming’s part in the Web3 scene and Mysten Labs’ upcoming piece of gaming gear, the “SuiPlay0X1.”
As Thompson sees it, gaming shakes out as an adventurous playpen for tech nerds to check out the Web3 scene. Basically, Web3 brings together stuff like artificial intelligence (AI), decentralized finance, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
Gaming gives the team at Mysten Labs a chance to mess around with these types of technologies. According to Thompson, the whole game scene isn’t just for fun and games-industry stuff for his team. He thinks of it more like a creative play area where they can poke around with different aspects of technology.
Back on Sept. 3, Mysten Labs had some news to share about the SuiPlay0X1. This device is a handheld gaming unit that brings together gaming and Web3 tech. It’s expected to be available by the first half of 2025, which will give gamers the chance to play on games made on the Sui blockchain and on their PCs.
Thompson didn’t spill a lot of the beans when asked about the device. But what he did share was that he hopes it will give users a way to dabble with AI, DeFi, and NFTs technology. He stated: “SuiPlay0X1 is really our very first entry into gaming hardware and Web3… the gadget will let our users have an interesting, interactive experience with all the cool stuff we’ve been talking about.”
When asked about getting gamers onto the Web3 system, Thompson admitted that the process of setting up wallets and getting set up for Web3 gaming hadn’t been great in the past. Still, the Mysten Labs crew hasn’t been idle. They’ve figured out a way for users to just tap into their Facebook or Google accounts to immediately activate a wallet in one click. They still have a ways to go to get things perfect, but Thompson’s certain things will continue to get smoother.
